How to enhance user experience with modern web design

How to enhance user experience (UX)

Steven Angelo, August 6, 2024

Your website holds more power than you may think. If it has a poor design, it will turn visitors away. Your leads won’t want to do business with you if they hate certain aspects of your website.

A recent study shows that 40% of visitors leave a website if it takes over three seconds to load pages. More people leave if a website has bad graphics and unhelpful features.

So, how do you enhance user experience (UX) through web design?

#1. Keep the design simple

Users don't visit a website to wow at its graphics, calligraphy, and animations. They come to seek answers to questions they might have. That's why you should keep your design simple.

Your website’s graphics should look modern and attractive. The font and content should be engaging. However, your overall theme should strive for simplicity. Your design needs to explain your business’ core goals in a few words.

Let’s say you create logos for small businesses. Anyone who comes to your website should discover what you do in the first few seconds. After that, show them your portfolio, pricing, and reasons to hire you.

#2. Use website space

Some website owners would rather use white space to place Google ads than to enhance engagement. The problem here is that clamping content makes it hard to read.

A survey by Crazy Egg shows that using white space appropriately can enhance user engagement by 20%. The explanation is that white space makes your content look fresh, organized, and modern.

White space can also help you focus your visitors' attention on a specific section of your website. Not only does this make your content easier to digest, but it also increases of converting leads into clients.

#3. Increase your loading speed

Page speed is one of the measures Google uses to rank your website's content. Google associates speed with quality. If your pages load fast, there's a strong chance you provide quality content.

Another benefit of a fast website is that it keeps leads on your website. As we mentioned earlier, many people abandon a website that takes too long to open pages. Internet users don’t have patience with slow websites.

Fortunately, fixing page speed is easy. Check your website’s page speed using a free service. If you use Google’s Page Speed Insights website, you can find tips to improve page speed.

Generally, compressive images, and reducing files and plugins can improve page speed. Investing in a CDN or changing your web-hosting provider can also accelerate your page speed even better.

#4: Increase user attention with images and headlines

Your images and content should be guided by what your potential customers are looking for. Consider how online casinos enhance engagement. Sites offering the best blackjack games display their best games conspicuously and use animations, clear graphics, bonuses, and well-constructed headlines to grab your attention.

The images and graphics around a blackjack site all focus on the game. The headlines encourage you to sign up for an account. And they give you a welcome bonus to motivate you into action.

The human eye pays more attention to bold headlines and attractive images over small blocks of text. Use design to focus your leads' attention on words like free, now, buy, and discount.

Visual elements are more effective than words. So, use videos, images, and illustrations to tell your message. Engagement gives a customer more time to understand your services. And this can lead to a higher conversion rate.

#5: Be responsive and mobile-friendly

A responsive website adapts to the user's device. If he clicks on the contact button, it responds by revealing your website's contacts. If a user hits the 'About Us' Page, your website should respond instantly.

When certain parts of your website don’t function, users become frustrated. Most people abandon a website as soon as it begins to frustrate them. In this age of iPhones and expensive Android devices, you need a website that responds to the needs of a mobile user.

In some industries, mobile customers dominate the market. You don’t want to alienate a large segment of your customer base by creating a design that works on desktop devices only. Provide mobile support to attract a larger audience.

#6. Be consistent

Consistency is one of the elements you need to turn your online business into a brand. Demonstrate consistency with your color schemes, fonts, heading sizes, logos, spacing, images, and design elements.

The design elements on your homepage, About Us, and other pages should be consistent. Users shouldn't feel like they've moved to a different website when they switch pages.

If a user navigates your website and feels lost at some point, they're likely to leave. Inconsistency raises questions. As a web designer, you need to provide all the answers users might have before they ask.

#7. Solve 404 errors

When someone clicks a link meant to take them to a certain page, the last thing they expect is a 404 Page Not Found Error. The user probably expected a detailed solution to a problem they had when they clicked the link.

Google’s webmaster tools can help you check if your website has 404 errors. It can also give you tips on how to solve these errors. A great solution helps users know where to go next. The best solution is to fix the errors so that links lead visitors where they’re supposed to go.

#8. Include a call-to-action

There's no need to invest in 3D graphics, quality content, and responsive features if you don’t include a call to action (CTA). A CTA encourages website visitors to take action.

Not everyone comes to your website ready to sign up or spend money. Some people come looking for information. Others are just comparing services. However, you might impress leads with your persuasive headlines, detailed videos, and reviews.

After they’re convinced, a CTA asks them to take action by buying your products. Without a CTA, some people might just bounce off your website. A call-to-action persuades target audience to become your customers.
